William Shakespeare and the Italian Book Club?

As the author of Alicia Allen Investigates–a legal crime trilogy with a strong Italian cultural theme and a female protagonist who is Anglo-Italian–I was intrigued and keen to discover more about Dr. Federico Conforto and his Italian Book Club. A few months ago, my publicist Marlan Warren suggested the club to me, and I found its website impressive. But when I chanced upon an interview in the Huffington Post (2/24/14) with Dr. Conforto, entitled “The Italian Book Club is looking for the next William Shakespeare,” I was even more intrigued.

William Shakespeare & Italy

By coincidence, my books often echo Shakespeare in some manner; so I was eager to learn more about Dr. Conforto’s plan for the Italian Book Club.

The Italian Book ClubDr. Conforto is a Senior Consultant in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care based in Rome. The eminent Doctor founded the organization just over two years ago but is already becoming well-known in the book industry with connections not only in Italy, but the UK, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Africa.

On the basis that Dr. Conforto is looking for the next William Shakespeare it seemed rather apt that I should meet with him in the Shakespeare Tavern near London Victoria. William Shakespeare set a third of his plays in Italy with his romantic Italian settings crucial to his plots. It is true to say that centuries later his influence is as strong as ever. William Shakespeare’s Italy is thriving. How about the Italian Book Club? Most definitely.

The first thing that I noticed about Dr. Conforto is his boundless energy, zeal and enthusiasm. He told me, “When you deal with life and death situations every working day of your life you have to find another outlet and, for me, that is books.” And he’s certainly very passionate and committed to promoting the book club, its members, authors and looking for burgeoning new talent.

Dr. Federico Conforto

“We’re becoming truly international,” he explained. “We are all about promoting culture, and books are a great means to do that.”

He went on to say, “When you have a true passion for something you can make it happen!” and I do believe that Dr. Conforto has the drive, determination and belief to do just that.

A Model Murder – Book of the Day EReader News 16 December 2014

Screen Shot 2014-12-16 at 16.32.50

A Model Murder is a fast-paced mystery that draws scary, sometimes hilarious, parallels between alpha males in strip clubs and law firms.

This first book in the Alicia Allen Investigates Trilogy introduces Alicia Allen, a 29-year-old London Anglo-Italian lawyer whose desire for Pringles is matched only by her desire to solve crime. When her neighbor—a beautiful aspiring Australian model—is found raped and murdered before she can pick up her first paycheck at a sleazy “hostess” club, Alicia ignites with such passion to bring the wrongdoer to justice, it would make even Portia envious.

As her dangerous quest draws her into the dark world of exploitative “hostess clubs,” Alicia finds herself facing similar circumstances in a new law firm where alpha males roam the halls in solicitor suits intimidating or stalking undervalued female coworkers. Worse luck, the deeper she delves into the investigation, the more her comfortable world falls apart. Friends are viciously attacked…potential lovers may not be what they seem…clues pop up in Italian opera, Shakespeare, and a cat.

Alicia finds her willingness to risk her own life for the sake of justice is sorely put to the test in a world where Fate plays no small role.

The Alicia Allen Investigates crime novels are fast-paced suspense mysteries, full of twists and turns, following in the tradition of writers such as Nicci French and Sue Grafton.

Murder in Hand: Italian International Corruption, Puccini & Dead Probate Lawyers…

Alicia Allen Investigates 3

Alicia Allen Investigates 3

PROMOTION

On Dec. 13 through Dec. 14, Murder in Hand is free via Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) Select program. Please click here.

I’m delighted that MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW’s December 2014 issue of its online magazine “Reviewer’s Bookwatch” features a review of “Murder in Hand“.

Here’s the review:

“Lawyers aren’t the most popular people, Miss Allen…” – Murder in Hand

In her cerebral legal mystery, Murder in Hand, Celia Conrad pulls her feisty half-Italian London Probate/Estate lawyer heroine, Alicia Allen, deeper into the quagmire world of unscrupulous attorneys, the unfortunates who work with them and their unsuspecting innocent victims. In this third book of the Alicia Allen Investigates Trilogy (AAI), Conrad hits her stride as a bona fide puzzle master. The plot line keeps readers guessing and the pages turning while the greatest pleasures lie in Conrad’s refusal–or perhaps inability–to write for the lowest common denominator of brainpower. Instead she aims for the highest.

The story takes off when Alicia’s Italian American client Fabio confides that he believes someone is trying to kill him. Fabio’s family ties span New York, England and Italy/Sicily; and when his sister is killed in the midst of doing some family estate research in Italy, Alicia embarks on a quest to find the killer. She leaps where proverbial angels fear to tread, resisting her lawyer-beau Alex’s concerns for her safety. Soon he is helping her sort the jigsaw pieces as the body count goes up (with the neat twist that it is mostly lawyers or their assistants turning up dead). Their cozy caring (and mutual potato chip addiction) provides a soothing contrast to the dark, random world of mayhem they must navigate.

As in the previous AAI books, important clues are hidden in the Classics. Murder in Hand pays homage to Gianni Schicchi, Puccini’s comic opera about a dead man’s Will gone wrong, schemers and estate swindlers. In fact, key action takes place in the Italian town that hosts an annual Puccini festival. The book’s title is a double entendre. British police refer to an investigation in progress as “in hand.” And the other meaning? Well, better bone up on your Puccini!

Murder in Hand  (Alicia Allen Investigates Trilogy, 3)

Celia Conrad, 2012
Barcham Books
352 pp.
ISBN-13: 9780954623340

Summary
This third book in the Alicia Allen Investigates Trilogy finds Alicia Allen—the half-Italian/half-British London solicitor with such a passion for justice it would make even Portia envious—sleuthing with her adoring cohort and fellow lawyer, Alex Waterford, in this tangled mystery of corruption on both sides of the law that spans England, New York, Sicily and mainland Italy.

When Fabio Angelino shows up in Alicia’s office, the Italian American not only asks her to handle the Probate of his mother’s English estate, but reveals that someone has been trying to kill him—perhaps the same person responsible for his lawyer father’s disappearance in Sicily 16 years ago while working for a New York firm. The Italian police suspect the Mafia, but Fabio’s father’s death remains unsolved. Alicia and Alex have developed a comfortable relationship, and he urges her not to get too involved for her own safety.

However, when Fabio’s sister, Giulia, is found callously murdered, Alicia feels compelled to investigate. Her quest takes her from England to Sicily and Italy over beautiful, but sinister, terrain as she finds herself pulled into an underworld where the most dangerous and corrupt criminals are those who hide behind the law.

Alicia’s Italian heritage comes to the surface as she looks for clues hidden in Italian Probate law, culture and Puccini. But in her bid to entrap the killer or killers, has Alicia Allen finally taken on malevolent forces too great, and will this be her last investigation? (From the publisher.)

This is the final book in the Alicia Allen Investigates Trilogy. A Model Murder (2011) is the first, and Wilful Murder (2011) is the second.

Author Bio

Celia Conrad is a British author who shares similarities with the heroine of her Alicia Allen Investigates Trilogy in her own Anglo-Italian heritage and solicitor experience (aka “lawyer” in the U.S.). Together they share an enthusiasm for crime solving, Shakespeare, All Things Italian and, of course, Pringles. A Model Murder was her debut novel, written at the suggestion of a mentor who encouraged her to write mysteries based on real-life stories she has encountered while working within the law. She followed it with Wilful Murder and Murder in Hand, Books 2 and 3, respectively in the Alicia Allen Investigates series. (From the author.)

Murder in Hand is a book I can recommend for Italophiles, Anglophiles, fans of traditional British mysteries, and fans of Cozy-Murder-Mysteries. Savor the setting details, meanderings, the theories, and the relationships. All true to the genre, along with multiple murders, investigative trails galore, an exciting ending, and a romantic Epilogue. The Alicia Allen Investigates series gives Italophile cozy-fans a look into the world of a young English woman whose life is enriched by her Italian mother’s culture, If you have read the first two books in the series, you will enjoy catching up with Alicia’s friends and family. If you are new to the series, you will still be able to understand and enjoy Alicia’s relationships, especially the interplay and affection with her boyfriend who is Alicia’s sounding board.

Summary
The second mystery in the Alicia Allen Investigates trilogy lures the justice-loving solicitor out of London and into the shadowy depths of the Land Down Under where nothing is what it seems and a risky Trust could lead to murder.

When an Australian-born heiress living in London asks Alicia Allen to draw up a Will in expectation of her forthcoming marriage and impending English fortune, she reveals that her family members have been meeting untimely deaths.

After her fiance is killed in an explosion, and her own life is threatened, she implores Alicia to investigate. Alicia soon finds herself hot on the trail of a psychopathic killer who could be responsible for the deaths and near-deaths that continue to occur in London and Australia—or are there two psychopaths working in tandem?

Alicia’s quest takes her to Australia—coinciding with an Australian friend’s wedding in Brisbane where Alicia’s old flame Alex Waterford has also been invited. Alex, a London lawyer now working in Singapore for a British firm, confesses his love for Alicia, but events conspire to make the pursuit of justice more important than personal desires, and the duo join forces to solve the crimes.

Putting questions of love on the back burner, they put their own lives on the line as they search for the answer to the murderous mystery that lies just beneath the misleadingly placid surfaces of Probate, Wills and a Trust. (From the publisher.)

This is the second book in the Alicia Allen Investigates Trilogy. A Model Murder (2011) is the first.

Book Reviews
Celia Conrad has composed a pastiche of cozy-cerebral murder mystery “must haves” plus a fresh blend of Travelogue, Greek Tragedy, Shakespeare and Love Story.
Dancing in the Experience Lane Book Reviews Blog

Alicia Allen in Australia may seem a cuddly, fluffy, Pringle-crunching koala, but when needed she can show both class and claws! Conrad sets any number of teasing possible outcomes in motion, and reserving some daring bait-and-switch manoeuvres for the final chapters. For much of the novel Alicia is in Australia while many of the key plot developments take place in England…yet the pace never slackens.

Discussion Questions
1.  What is your opinion of the bitter family feuds and inheritance issues as they are depicted in Wilful Murder?

2. In what ways can you relate to the concept of hostile and greedy relatives and toxic family ties?

3. Since Wilful Murder is Book 2 of the Alicia Allen Investigates Trilogy, did it strike you as a “stand-alone” mystery tale, or would you suggest readers read Book 1, A Model Murder, first? What is the reason for your answer?

4. What do you see as Alicia Allen’s strengths and weaknesses as a lawyer/detective?

5. Do you agree with Alex that Alicia’s feeling of obligation to do the best for her clients goes too far sometimes?

6. What do you think about Alicia’s on/off relationship with Alex? Why do you think Alicia pushes him away when it is evident she is so attracted to him?

7. How does Alicia compare with the other female characters? What did you think about her relationships with other women in the story?

8. What’s your reaction to how Alicia handles authority figures?

9. How do you feel about the action that leads up to Drew’s murder? Did it surprise you? How did you think the story was going to develop?

10. How did you feel about Alicia’s heiress-client Isabelle, and what happens to her? Did you feel sympathy or empathy for her at the beginning? Did those feelings change? If so, how?

11. How did you feel about the way the “backstory” (past events told by various characters) was presented? Did it slow the action down, confuse you, or make you curious to learn more?

12. Most of the violent scenes are not shown to the reader. News of the deaths or “accidents” are relayed by “messenger.” How did you feel about this?

13. In what ways did the action being set in London and Australia (with murders taking place across different time zones and locations) help or hurt your enjoyment of this story?

14. What was your reaction when the identity of the murderer was revealed? What, if any, clues were you able to spot?

15. What role, if any, do you feel Fate plays in the story?

16. How do you feel about the way language and culture is portrayed? Did you learn anything new about Italian or Australian culture? If you are American, did you learn anything new about British and Australian language or food?

17. If you have read A Model Murder (Book 1), how did you feel about some characters in that book not reappearing or playing a bigger role in Wilful Murder (Book 2)? Please discuss why you were or were not disappointed?

18. Which characters would you like to see return to Book 3 (Murder in Hand)? If you have read A Model Murder, are there any characters there that you would like to reappear in the last book of the Trilogy?

19. Regarding Alicia and Alex’s on again/off again relationship, were you as interested in what happens with them romantically as you were in their solving the crime crime together? Why or why not?

Murder, Intrigue & Corruption: Latest review of Murder in Hand (Alicia Allen Investigates Book 3) by Celia Conrad

My especial thanks to Marlan Warren for her detailed review of Murder in Hand (below) which was first published on the Open Salon blog on 12 November 2014.

“Murder in Hand”: Italian Probate, Puccini & Dead Lawyers

MIH

Lawyers aren’t the most popular people, Miss Allen…”

—Murder in Hand

In her cerebral legal mystery, Murder in Hand, Celia Conrad pulls her feisty London Probate/Estate lawyer heroine, Alicia Allen, deeper into the quagmire world of unscrupulous attorneys, the unfortunates who work with them and their unsuspecting innocent victims. In this third book of the Alicia Allen Investigates Trilogy (AAI), Conrad hits her stride as a bona fide puzzle master in the tradition of Agatha Christie. The easy-to-follow plot line keeps readers guessing and the pages turning, while great pleasures lie in Conrad’s refusal–or perhaps inability–to write for the lowest common denominator of brain power. Instead she aims for the highest.

If you want to roll with Alicia Allen…better bring your A-Game (and some knowledge of the Classics wouldn’t hurt).

Murder in Hand could be enjoyed as a stand-alone book if readers don’t mind not knowing the history between the justice-loving attorney Alicia Allen and her adoring cohort Alex Waterford; her investigator friends, Jo and Will; or her cultured elderly neighbor Dorothy.

 Gianni_Schicchi_Dore_Gustav

“I can’t leave you alone for a few hours without somebody else being murdered.”—Murder in Hand

As in Books 1 and 2 (A Model Murder and Wilful Murder), Alicia leaps where proverbial angels fear to tread, resisting Alex’s concerns for her safety. and soon he is helping her sort the puzzle pieces as the body count goes up (with the neat twist that as they hone in, it is lawyers or their assistants who are now dropping dead). Their relationship has matured into an easy partnership built on love, trust and the potato chip that rhymes with “Tingles.” It provides a soothing stability that contrasts with the dark, random world of mayhem they are navigating together.

 Gianni Painting

“I generally advise my clients to make both a British and an Italian Will.Murder in Hand

All the AAI books turn on classical theater or operatic references or clues. Murder in Hand pays homage to Gianni Schicchi (which Puccini based on Danté’s Divine Comedy), a comic opera about a dead man’s Will gone wrong, schemers and estate swindlers. And it won’t be spoiling too much to divulge that key action takes place in the Italian town that hosts an annual Puccini festival.

The book’s title is a double entendre. British police refer to an investigation in progress as “in hand.” And as for the other meaning…well, you’ll just have to read the book, won’t you?

Do you judge a book by its cover? The Alicia Allen Investigates crime series

Celia Conrad @Iwrite2b
There are a number of factors that have influenced my choice of book covers for my crime series featuring the Anglo-Italian lawyer Alicia Allen.
A-Model-Murder-Cover-3D

A Model Murder

Wilful Murder

Wilful Murder

Murder in Hand

Murder in Hand

Whether a reader likes your book cover or indeed your book itself is totally subjective. But it is a known fact that imagery is very influential, and a powerful book cover which stands out can be a major factor as to whether a reader picks up your book or not. These days it is not just a question of creating a cover that will help promote physical copies of your books sold in bookshops but also creating a cover that will give your book a great online presence and which readers will hopefully pause to look at, and make them curious enough to want to at least find out more about the book contents.

When I was researching for my Alicia Allen Investigates book covers I spent some considerable time scrutinizing book covers in my genre. My books are not visceral thrillers but more cozy crime murder mysteries and I wanted the covers to convey that and I also wanted the covers to reflect the subject matter. Of course the title of the book plays a great part in the latter although that is a topic in itself and the subject matter of another blog post.

But for my crime trilogy I knew that it was essential to carry the same theme for all three books so that they could be instantly recognizable as part of the same series and distinctive so that they could not be confused with the book covers of any other book series in my genre. But I also wanted the cover to reflect the genre. So the covers were all designed with these factors in mind.

The first book in the series, A Model Murder, and as the title suggests, is about the murder of a model. The L of the word Model on the cover is formed out of a lipstick and its lid. It’s simple but the positive feedback I have received indicates that it works – well for most people anyway! I was delighted that A Model Murder was picked by Shelf Buzz as one of the best free Kindle ebooks for 1 June 2014 judged by its cover.

The second book Wilful Murder is about an Australian heiress so about inheritance and money. Part of the book is set in Australia so the cover has an Australian theme with a boomerang forming the letter L of Wilful and there is a scroll representing a Will over the letter I of the word Wilful too. The orangey red earthy colour of the word Wilful and on the back cover is synonymous with the rich colours we associate with Australia. Just think of Ayers Rock and that vivid colour springs to mind.

Murder in Hand, the third and final part of the trilogy, is the most Italian of the books. This is clearly reflected by the use of the green, white and red colours of the Italian flag and also the flag itself, which is incorporated into the text. The R of the word Murder is formed with a Beretta, which continues the Italian theme of the book.

If you are a reader does the book cover impact upon your decision to read it or not? What influences you to pick up a certain book as opposed to another? Apart from the obvious: recommendation and reviews.

I’d be interested to read your comments and thank you for reading this post.
